Sweeter Than Fiction

The second the door closes, Theo asks, “Are you okay?”

I heard what he asked, but I’m too busy scanning my surroundings. This must be his bedroom, but it’s immaculate and minimalistic. There’s a shaggy grey carpet on the floor, a black metal bedframe holding a queen bed, white bedding, and a large black bolster pillow across the top. He has only one end table to the right, holding a lamp and a few books—that I will definitely inspect at my first opportunity—abstract art over the bed, and a dresser with nothing but a watch and cologne on top. I figured Theo was a simple guy, but this confirms it; no bells or whistles for him. The thing that catches my eye is a beautiful Gibson acoustic guitar sitting in the corner.

“You play?”

He follows my eyes but doesn’t answer my question before repeating his. “Are you okay? You were shaking, and I was worried your switch was ready to flip. I’m sorry if that was a lot.”

I hadn’t realized I was shaking, but now that I’ve had a moment to breathe, I can feel the tension in my body. The fact he was so in tune with my physical reaction is mind-blowing. “I didn’t know what anyone was saying. I struggle to read people when they’re speaking English. None of the podcasts I listened to covered any of what you said.”

He chuckles. “You listened to Spanish podcasts?”

My face flushes once again. You’re such a loser. “What did you and your mom say?”

Theo raises a hand to the back of his neck and turns away. He spins back toward me and plants a kiss on my lips, but I swat at his chest.

“Oh, no you don’t. You’re not going to distract me with kisses. Please, just tell me what you guys said, otherwise I’ll spend the rest of the afternoon obsessing over it until I’m exhausted and have to leave before I shut down. I don’t want to make a fool of myself, and maybe it’s stupid, or rude of me to want to know, but please tell me.”

“It’s not rude. We were rude for having a conversation you couldn’t understand, and I’m sorry.”

“Theo…”

“Okay. Basically, my mom said you’re a beautiful woman.”

Well, that’s embarrassing. I’m not sure how to process that because his mom and sister are beyond stunning.

“And?”

He blows out a breath. “I agreed. Then she told me life passes too quickly and asked what I was waiting for.”

“Waiting for what?” Oh… Oh! I understand what he’s implying a second too late. My cheeks are burning with renewed intensity.

“Don’t mind her. My parents were married three months after they met, and I think my mom assumes it happens the same way for everyone. But I don’t want to rush anything, Isla.” He steps closer to me, drawing his lips into a smile. “I want to do this right.”

I know Theo said he doesn’t date unless he’s serious, but I may have underestimated how serious he is. A subject change is much needed, so I draw his attention back to the guitar.
